With the festivities of the Lunar New Year still in full swing, it’s the perfect time to go hunting for some delicious Chinese food.
A popular dish served during Chinese New Year is “lor bak” – five-spice meat rolls usually made of pork, though there are halal varieties as well.
And if you happen to be in Klang in Selangor, pay a visit to Chap Teo Seng, an old-school kopitiam more popularly known among the locals as Ngoh Heong, which means “five spice”.
Chap Teo Seng, located in a shophouse on Lorong Sena here, has two stalls selling lor bak – complete with a wide selection of accompanying side items that you can pick and choose from for the seller to fry up for you – as well as char kuey teow.
As it turns out, the char kuey teow was quite a revelation. Despite it being a rather small serving, the kuey teow here is packed with the flavour of “wok hei” – the “breath of the wok” – and, more importantly, plenty of juicy sea cockles.
It was so good that you might even forgive them for committing the cardinal sin of not having prawns!

As for the lor bak, well, the “ngoh heong” itself was just OK, perhaps due to the meat being on the lean side – everyone knows that fattier content results in a more delicious meat roll!
But the prawn fritters, spring rolls, tofu, and other items were generally good. And if you’re a fan of century eggs, the ones at this lor bak stall are served semi-runny, which is a definite must-try.
All in all, this place is worth a visit. Remember, Klang isn’t just about bak kut teh!
