Acar Jelatah: a refreshing dish that perks up any meal

This sweet-sour-spicy salad is best enjoyed with rich curries to balance out the flavours.

The main star of Acar Jelatah is fresh pineapple. (The Orange Sieve pic)

This is ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ in a dish.

Acar Jelatah is traditionally served as a condiment or side dish with Malay dishes which are richer in flavour, like Ayam Masak Merah for instance, as it helps to bring balance on the plate and create a freshness that brightens everything.

It is such a simple and incredible dish that takes mere minutes to make and really deserves more praise as one of Malaysia’s best dishes.

As it happens, pineapples symbolise good luck and prosperity during Chinese New Year. So not only will this dish perk you up, it will also usher in all the good vibes ahead of Chinese New Year that is just around the corner. Double win.

Flavours and pairings

A sweet, sour, spicy and tangy taste-sensation. Great to serve alongside dishes like Ayam Masak Merah, Beef Rendang or even Biryani.

To mix things up a little, serve as a salad with barbequed ribs – always a crowd-pleaser.

  • 1 cucumber, sliced into half-moons
  • 2 small shallots, finely sliced,
  • 2-3 bird’s eye chillies, finely sliced
