Kai si hor fun and pork satay at Ipoh’s Thean Chun

A non-halal Ipoh specialty kai si hor fun tastes best in its hometown, with an honourable mention for the pork satay on the side.

NON-HALAL: Restoran Thean Chun is located at Ipoh Old Town, and on normal days commands quite a long queue and wait time.

Thankfully, due to Covid-19 and being somewhat early in the morning (before 10am), there wasn’t a crowd.

The kai si hor fun is a dish that has prawns as well as poultry. Shredded steamed chicken with sliced prawns on top, a soup enhanced with prawn oil and those yummy Ipoh bean sprouts and chives make for quite a unique taste.

Outside Ipoh, this dish usually captures some of these elements but falls short when it comes to the quality of the bean sprouts.

Speaking of bean sprouts, they are offered as a side dish as well, which is 100% recommended.

Other than the excellent kai si hor fun, another stall worth checking out would be the pork satay at the rear.

The pork meat satay and intestine (actually pig fallopian tubes, or ‘sang cheong’) were definitely yummy.

The intestine was especially delicious – soft and crunchy at the same time and paired super well with the satay sauce.
