The 32-year-old went up against Sandro Farmhouse, 30, and Abdul Rehman Sharif, 29, in the finale of its 13th season, which aired yesterday.
Upon being declared the winner by Channel 4 actor and host Matt Lucas, she said it was one of her “biggest achievements of my life”.
Celebrity chef Paul Hollywood also congratulated her, calling her “an incredible baker”.
“She can be a bit of a risk taker with her flavours, and it has worked. Some of the flavours we have never had in the tent before, and are unlikely to have again,” Hollywood added.
With the theme of the finale being “sustainability”, contestants were required to use local ingredients that were as sustainable as possible, excluding meats.
For the signature challenge, the trio were directed to assemble the perfect picnic, and were tasked with making a Summer Pudding Bombe – a British dessert made with berries and sliced white bread layered in a deep bowl.
However, both Syabira’s and Farmhouse’s creations collapsed after their jelly and mousse failed to set – the result of having to use vegetarian gelatin without any instructions, which prompted certain viewers to accuse the contestants of being “set up to fail”.
Fortunately, Syabira pulled ahead by adding a Malaysian twist to the final showstopper challenge, crafting an edible orangutan in celebration of the planet. She was shortly thereafter declared the winner.
On Instagram, many praised the young woman for her creative dish, while others who have been following her closely on the series were thrilled she bagged first place.
A cardiovascular research associate from the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at Kings College London, Syabira moved to the United Kingdom in 2013 to pursue her PhD.
She only began baking in 2017 and decided to apply to join the series after watching an episode two years ago.
