KOTA BHARU:
The Jalur Gemilang continues to fly proudly across the nation in the lead-up to Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

For The Sports House, located on Jalan Gajah Mati here, National Month is an especially busy period as their Jalur Gemilang flags sell like hot cakes – including giant-sized ones.

Manager Siti Zaleha Yakub said orders have been coming in since June, with the 6m-by-12m Jalur Gemilang, nearly the size of a three-storey building and priced at RM2,600 each, among the highest in demand.

“Orders increase three months before National Day, and by mid-August, more than 100 giant Jalur Gemilang flags had already been sold,” she told Bernama.

“Some customers order Jalur Gemilang worth tens of thousands of ringgit, depending on the size and fabric, with a single giant flag weighing up to 5kg.”

She said the company once received an order for a Jalur Gemilang measuring 15m by 61m that was displayed during the National Day parade at Dataran Merdeka several years ago.

The flags are produced by local factories using fabrics such as polyester, microfibre and mashiro, some of which are imported to ensure they can withstand heat and rain.

“Microfibre fabric lasts longer and does not fade easily, but it is more expensive than mashiro. Whatever the case, quality is a priority because customers want the Jalur Gemilang to be used over a long period,” Siti Zaleha noted.

The Sports House, which has been operating since 1992, sells not only the Jalur Gemilang and state flags but flags of other countries in various sizes, in addition to sports equipment.

The company further supplies decorative stripes, buntings and stickers, which are popular choices among schools, petrol stations, and non-governmental organisations.

Siti Zaleha hopes the flying of Jalur Gemilang flags, large and small, will not only enliven celebrations during National Month but also strengthen the patriotic spirit among the people.
