KOTA BHARU:
Drani Muhamad still remembers Tunku Abdul Rahman chanting “merdeka” seven times on Aug 31, 1957.

It is a memory that fuels his love for the homeland to this day – one made even more meaningful as he’d had the opportunity to witness the momentous event in person at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

“The atmosphere was full of joy. People cheered, some cried while chanting ‘merdeka’ together. It was unforgettable and it inspired me to continue loving this country,” the 93-year-old told Bernama at his home in Kuala Balah, Jeli, Kelantan.

Fondly known as Pokwo Drani, the father of five recalled that he and some friends, as well as his father and father-in-law, had set off from Kampung Kuala Balah Lama by car before arriving at Stadium Merdeka at around 8am.

“Our journey was smooth without any obstacles. Upon arrival, I was stunned to see thousands of people of various races gathered with faces full of joy.

“Even though we had to walk almost half a km from the parking lot, it did not dampen our spirits.”

At around 9am, Tunku took to the main stage, declaring independence after “Negaraku” was played for the first time, before leading the chant of “merdeka” seven times.

This was greeted by the roar of tens of thousands of people, recalled Drani, who even had the opportunity to shake hands with Tunku.

Drani urges each generation to appreciate the blessings of independence and not forget the services of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.

“In the past, we lived in poverty, food was rationed, electricity supply was undependable, and people often moved because they were worried about safety.

“Today, our children and grandchildren are free to study, do business, and build a future as a result of the sacrifices of previous generations,” he said.
