PETALING JAYA:
Autism is no barrier for Aiman Nurhakim Jeffry, who has acquired the relevant skills and now works full-time as a “hipster” barber at Crown Barbershop in Bandar Saujana Putra, Selangor.

The 25-year-old, who was diagnosed with mild autism when he was six, proficiently cuts trendy hairstyles such as the “side part”, “two block”, “spiky”, “French crop”, and “top knot”. He also caters to customers’ requests.

Speaking with FMT, his father Jeffry Ahmad said Aiman had shown strong interest in the barbering profession after attending skills classes in 2018.

“Apart from improving his haircutting skills, my goal in sending him to these classes was to boost his self-confidence by improving his socialising and communication skills,” Jeffry explained.

“Now I can see he’s more confident and able to communicate with customers, in addition to cutting hair.”

Jeffry revealed that he had tried to enrol Aiman in a government-run skills institution, but the centre had deemed the courses unsuitable for individuals with autism as they involved sharp objects like knives and scissors.

“We finally sent him to a private academy that taught these skills. Aiman also participated in a career programme at the Gamuda Enabling Academy,” he said, adding that his son had thereafter worked at a barbershop and had also done house calls.

As for the future, Jeffry has big plans, including opening a barbershop for his son. But first, he said, Aiman needs to start with the basics and learn about business management.

“I currently let Aiman work so that he understands customers’ needs, as well as how to take down bookings and accept payments. Once he’s fully skilled, we’ll open a barbershop for him,” Jeffry said.

And in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month next month, the doting dad hopes to encourage a career in haircutting as a viable option for those on the spectrum.

“Parents with autistic children can explore this path. I also urge academies to start more classes allowing those with autism to learn new skills, just like other children.”
