Featuring a selection of 80 images, this event juxtaposes works by photographers who captured images of Tokyo in the 1930s-40s with those taken after 2010.
According to JFKL, the earlier works showcase the period during which the current framework of Tokyo had begun to take form, while the more contemporary images depict the capital city as it navigates the challenges and transformations of a new era.
“Pre-World War II, photographers effectively captured vibrant images of urban space where tradition and modernity contended with one another,” the foundation said in a statement.
“In the aftermath of the greet East Japan earthquake in March 2011, the city underwent profound changes, embracing resilience and reinvention. Contemporary photographers emphasise their unique perspectives, utilising the innovative possibilities of digital technology to portray a city adapting to rapid societal shifts.”
By comparing photos from these two distinct periods, “Tokyo’s past, present and future image clearly emerges and reveals itself”, JFKL added.
It concluded: “As global interest in Tokyo remains strong, this exhibition invites viewers to explore Japan’s capital as a city of complexity and transformation”, in a “compelling visual dialogue reflecting Tokyo’s resilience and diversity.”
