KANGAR:
What started as a creative hobby during the Movement Control Order in 2020 has become a source of income for homemaker Rohani Atan.

The 63-year-old mother of five, who is based in Arau, Perlis, crafts unique fun-sized items from a clay dough of her own making.

Speaking with Bernama, she shared that her handcrafted items were in great demand, particularly her betelnut arrangements, realistic miniature foods, and items shaped like clocks.

She makes the dough herself using a mix of cornstarch, latex glue, food colouring and petroleum jelly. This dough hardens naturally, making it unnecessary to use an oven.

“The time taken to craft an item depends on the complexity of the design,” she explained. “It can anywhere from five minutes to over three hours.”

For Rohani, crafting realistic-looking miniature foods is her greatest joy and challenge, as it demands both precision and considerable time to perfect the details and ensure the best-possible end result.

“In terms of durability, the colouring in the dough should last about five years,” she added.

Rohani frequently takes part in programmes organised by Kraftangan Perlis, including art exhibitions, which provides a platform through which she markets her creations.

“Whenever I take part in events, my sales can reach up to RM1,000. I also plan to improve the dough recipe and expand my designs to include floral arrangements,” she said.

Her handicraft products, primarily promoted on Facebook, are priced between RM5 and RM250. Customers also have the option of placing custom orders.
