Go past the gates and what awaits you is a cosy front yard and the promise of an excellent cup of coffee brewed by Coco Tan, one of the cafe’s founders.
“I opened Yunshu because I believe specialty coffee has infinite possibilities in terms of brewing and enjoyment,” Tan, 30, told FMT Lifestyle.

She said she first started enjoying coffee while in school although it was mostly instant coffee back then since she couldn’t afford to patronise cafés.
However, while in college, a café opened near her hostel and she jumped at the chance to work there as a part-time barista. This was in 2013.
The following year, she switched to full-time work and began taking part in latte art competitions both in and out of Malaysia. She has won several championship titles since then. She also conducts coffee classes.
Then in 2022, Tan and a few partners started Yunshu Coffee.

“We don’t limit coffee to just sweet, bitter or acidic,” she said. “There are many other flavours and layers in a cup that you can taste. That’s why we say we make what we call specialty coffee.”
Even the cup’s shape, material and rim size are carefully chosen by Tan to ensure optimal enjoyment. Also, her coffee is brewed at the perfect temperature for you to drink the moment it is served.
Foodwise, hungry customers looking for a nice weekend brunch would love the Yunshu Breakfast Extra.
The hearty platter consists of a breakfast roll, salad, scrambled eggs and homemade chicken patty. It’s a healthy and filling combination that’ll start your day off right.

Fancy a sandwich? The mushy sourdough sandwich comes highly recommended. The scrambled egg and creamy mushroom between the sourdough slices make for an irresistible and satisfying bite. Caution: it may get a bit messy while you’re eating it, but it’s worth it.
The café is also known for its bagels, and when you bite into the Cincalok Chicken Bagel, you’ll understand why. The chicken is seasoned and fried just right, and while the pairing of kimchi and tomato might seem peculiar, their flavours actually work well together.
Of course, don’t leave without tasting the coffee. If you prefer a minimalistic approach, the classic hot latte wouldn’t disappoint. The espresso-based cuppa and milk is a match made in coffee heaven, and the pretty latte art is the cherry on top.

If you want to try something different, opt for the Monk Black, made with monk fruit slow-cooked with sugarcane and mixed with frothed espresso. The flavours go well together. In fact, even those who don’t care much for coffee will find it nice.
About the café’s name, Tan explained that “yun” is Chinese for “cloud”. The ever-changing nature of clouds is meant to convey the versatility of coffee.
“Shu” means “tree”. She said: “It represents the workers or customers in the café, constant and reliable.”
