But at Pakanira – a boutique workshop nestled in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara in Petaling Jaya, Selangor – the essence of jewellery-making goes far beyond the finished product. It’s about the joy of crafting something beautiful with your own hands for someone you care about.
Or, as co-owner Mohd Fahmy Ahmad Fauzi puts it: “We don’t sell rings – we sell the experience, a lasting memory.”
The brainchild of 24-year-old Sofea Zulfadzli, this unique workshop is the result of her passion for the craft of silversmithing. Aimed at romantic couples, family members, or even just friends, the goal is to create memorable bonding experiences by crafting bespoke silver rings together.
“People are so attached to their phones these days, I feel they have forgotten how to do hands-on crafts and have fun,” Sofea told FMT Lifestyle. “Our workshops, which are very beginner friendly, are the best way for them to do that.”

Founded last year on Valentine’s Day, the name “Pakanira” carries special significance – it’s an ancient Malay word meaning “you”. “I chose it because you are either making a ring for yourself or gifting it to a loved one,” Sofea explained.
And if you think Pakanira is set in a gloomy, industrial factory, think again – the quaint space perfectly marries traditional Malay and modern aesthetics with rattan lampshades, batik aprons, potted plants, and wood furniture.
“We want this place to be as enjoyable as possible. We have silly hats for particpants to wear, card games for them to play while waiting, and we also offer childhood snacks,” Sofea added.
Participants can choose from six minimalist ring designs – Melati, Mawar, Kemboja, Widuri, Seroja, and Cempaka – all crafted from 925 sterling silver.

They will be guided throughout the process, ensuring even beginners can succeed. This includes heating the sterling-silver wire to make it pliable, flattening it, engraving, and bending it according to ring size.
For the more technical aspects such as soldering and polishing, Sofea lends a helping hand.
The Johor-born’s passion for crafts began at a young age, supported by her parents who bought her art supplies. After graduating with a diploma in interior design, she explored various arts and crafts before discovering jewellery making.
Sofea embarked on silversmithing in 2020, honing her skills with a well-known local brand offering customised jewellery services. This stint, combined with her own initiative and experimentation, laid the groundwork for what would become Pakanira.

According to her, many participants get to know each other better through the workshops. One standout moment was a surprise proposal last year, during a session booked by a couple and two friends.
“The girlfriend thought they were there to make friendship promise rings. Instead, the boyfriend proposed with the ring he had made. It was definitely a first for us, and it was so romantic!”
Looking ahead, Sofea and Fahmy are keen on expanding their business. For starters, a new batch of knotted ring designs will be released next year.
Earrings and bracelets will also be added to the mix; and, upon popular request, Pakanira might introduce gold and rose-gold items.
The two-hour workshop is priced at RM330 for a solo participant, RM570 for couples, and RM1,040 for a group of four.
