KL-born Victor Wong can’t wait for his first solo M’sian concert

KUALA LUMPUR:
For more than two decades, homegrown popstar Victor Wong has been serenading the world with his heartfelt, emotional ballads.

The singer, who is based in Taiwan, is beloved for such Mandopop hits as “Unlocked Door”, “I Thought”, “Responsibility of Loving You”, and “Chong Lai”.

Despite his large local fanbase, the KL-born Wong has never had a solo show in his home country. But this is about to change as he performs a long-awaited homecoming concert at the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands next month.

“I have many commitments overseas as I’m based in Taipei with shows in China. We’d previously been approached for shows in Malaysia, but we missed those opportunities because of other engagements,” Wong explained during a recent press conference.

“For this show, we were approached by the organisers about a year in advance. So, finally, we can make it happen!”

Wong rose to prominence as half of the duo Michael and Victor, formed in 1995 with Ipoh-born singer Michael Wong. The pair shot to fame here as well as in countries such as Taiwan, Singapore and China, before parting ways in 2000 to pursue solo careers.

Since then, Wong – who is also known as Pin Guan – has released 11 full studio albums, including “Need U Most” (2007) and “A Gift of Love” (2011). His full discography includes three compilation albums, two live concert albums, and even an album of classic English children’s songs.

Wong’s music has won him many accolades, including two awards at the 22nd China Music Awards in 2018.

The singer will be performing here as part of his “See You Today” tour, organised by TOP Entertainment. The concert takes its name from one of Wong’s hits, which is about seizing the moment: a very apt name for his very first solo concert at home.

“We tend to say things like ‘see you tomorrow’ or ‘see you next time’. But why wait? If we’re going to see each other again, why not make it today? There are a lot of uncertainties in life, especially after Covid. Let’s not waste time,” Wong quipped.

The youthful 52-year-old added that he had told Malaysian fans he would perform a concert on home soil before he retired, and this was him keeping his promise.

The concert will also serve as an opportunity for reunions: first with his parents, whom he has not met in about two years because of the pandemic; and also with his schoolmates.

“I have a chat group with my school friends; when I announced my concert, the response was overwhelming!

“Some of my old teachers, who are now in their 80s, are planning to go up to Genting for the show. I hope we can all take a photo together,” said Wong, who previously studied at Methodist Boys School here.

On the subject of reunions, was one with his old partner Michael on the cards? Wong said there are no plans at the moment, as he will continue to tour after his concert and is also working on a new album.

He concluded by thanking his Malaysian fans for all their support and said he looked forward to “seeing you today”.

“There are so many songs I want to perform, and there will be a few medleys,” he teased. “I will do my best and give the most out of all my compositions, so give yourself to me for one day. You’re going to have a great time.”
