KUALA SELANGOR Kuala Selangor has long been a popular spot for tourists. There’s plenty to enjoy in this picturesque little town, be it delectable local seafood, historical landmarks, or enchanting night-time firefly cruises.

Not quite sure where to start on your visit here? No worries. Pop by Auntie Foo Café, a cosy local eatery which aims to help tourists maximise their time in Kuala Selangor. The cheerful café offers hearty and affordable food and drinks, as well as useful information for travellers.

“Due to Auntie Foo Café’s strategic location close to tourist spots in Kuala Selangor’s historic old town, we have the opportunity to help tourists, especially those travelling on their own,” café owner Leong Hui Ching told FMT Lifestyle.

“There are so many wonderful things to do here, and I like sharing my travel experiences and connecting the travellers to locals.”

Providing hospitality is definitely in Leong’s blood: it all started with her grandfather, who opened a Hainanese coffee shop in Kuala Selangor in 1935.

After his passing, Leong’s mother Foo Ah Yong (yes, the ‘Auntie Foo’ from the cafés name!) took over the business, converting the coffee shop to a café and naming it “Auntie’s Kopitiam”. That shop is still open today and is run by Foo, after over 30 years in business. Following in her family’s footsteps, Leong opened Auntie Foo Café in 2012.

The café is certainly a boon to Kuala Selangor visitors: whether its food, lodging or sightseeing advice they need, Leong is more than willing to share her experiences.

Pop by for various useful tourist resources, such as bus schedules to and from the town, and a travel guide booklet you can download through a QR code. You can even make tram bookings, or arrangements to visit certain local attractions, such as the firefly cruise.

Auntie Foo Café also stocks various souvenirs, from Kuala Selangor postcards to T-shirts and handicrafts, so you can remember your trip here.

And if you’re visiting Sekinchan, a popular nearby travel destination, there’s a paddy plantation schedule to help you plan visits to its scenic rice fields!

Not in the mood for sightseeing today? No worries. The café is also a great place to just relax and have a meal or drink. Its eye-catching star-shaped lights and lush indoor greenery invoke a friendly and welcoming atmosphere here.

The food here is your standard local and Western fare, which is simple yet scrumptious. Try their Chicken Chop, which comes with three sauce options: their luscious home-made brown sauce comes highly recommended.

Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with popular dishes such as the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang, or Fish and Chips. Everything served here is pork-free.

Early risers can try the café’s Breakfast Sets, while pasta dishes are available from 11am onwards from Wednesdays to Saturdays.

The venue also serves a variety of drinks and desserts: their milkshakes and three-layer teas are great, and caffeine addicts will no doubt enjoy the buzzy Cappuccino Cincao. The most popular choice here, however, is the Cendol, a delightful refreshment best enjoyed on a hot Kuala Selangor afternoon.

In short, there’s plenty to enjoy at Auntie Foo Café. It’s a great place to stop by for a meal during a long day of sight-seeing: say after a hike up nearby Bukit Melawati, or an eagle-feeding session at the mouth of the Selangor River. Its charms will definitely grow on you.
