In the Bajau language, “Luma” means “home” and indeed, this hotel, which opened in January last year, makes for a comfortable and classy second home.

Strategically located, Luma is close to many of KK’s tourist magnets such as the Imago Shopping Mall and the KK Waterfront.

Still, if you’re hungry or in need of everyday supplies, the hotel shares a building, namely Sutera Avenue, with several shops and eateries, so you will want for nothing.

Luma’s unique aesthetics are based on Sabah’s natural beauty, something a guest is reminded of the moment they step into the lobby.

With plenty of green and brown hues, the hotel presents itself as an inviting space, with rows of hanging plants giving the hotel a certain “freshness”.

Even the spiral staircase is designed to look like a seashell, a reminder of the state’s gorgeous coastline.

Looks are just half the equation to a good hotel though. Service makes up for the other and in that regard, Luma does not disappoint. Checking in is a breeze, and “service with a smile” is taken seriously here at the reception.

Luma has seven types of rooms and suites, each suited for a different type of traveller.

For the simple solo traveller, the few-frills Fern Cosy would suffice, while families with cash to burn would find themselves at home in the luxurious Family Extraordinary.

FMT Lifestyle was housed in the Grass Standard room, which proved to be as comfortable as it was pleasing to the eye.

In addition to a 43” television with crystal clear satellite channels, the room was well-equipped in terms of amenities.

In addition to the usual comforts – mini bar and safety box – there was also a coffee machine. Mind you, the sachets of tea and coffee were quality brands – tea from Kundasang and coffee from Sabah’s very own plantations. The hotel also has water dispensers in the hallways outside the rooms.

It is interesting to note that Luma dedicates itself to being as eco-friendly as possible, hence the bamboo toothbrushes among others.

Like any good hotel, Luma has several facilities to keep guests occupied without ever having to leave the hotel grounds.

This includes a fully-equipped gymnasium, where you can sweat away the calories gained from eating local hawker treats.

Speaking about food, there are also in-house eateries which you can hang out in whenever you have the munchies.

Right behind the lobby is Flow Coffee, a chic café which serves coffee and cakes. It is a good place to get some work done or to read a book in silence.

And upstairs on the first level is Jojo Gastrobar, a fancy restaurant-cum-bar where hearty meals as well as rounds of drinks are available.

So, whether you are a tourist visiting KK for the first time, or a return visitor on a business trip, Luma, with its great service and comfy rooms, is always ready to welcome you home.
