SUBANG JAYA:
Indulging in sweet cravings is a guilty pleasure many people have, and if you’re searching for a decadent and unique dessert, then head to Lukumades.

What began as a food truck business in Melbourne in 2016, Lukumades has revolutionised the popular Greek delicacy called Loukoumades and is now making waves in Malaysia with its franchise store in SS15, Subang Jaya.

So, what are these Loukoumades? A beloved street dessert with origins tracing back to ancient Greece, Loukoumades or Lokmas are deep-fried dough balls, soaked in honey syrup and dusted with cinnamon and nuts.

While the traditional versions are still popular, the recent trend in modernising these treats has made them a global phenomenon.

At Lukumades, you can experience the best of both worlds – classic and modern.

Their innovative menu features a wide selection of rich sauces and toppings. With their fried dough balls as the perfect canvas, you can get creative and indulge in a variety of flavour combinations for your perfect dessert experience.

FMT had the pleasure of sampling their most popular items on the menu, starting with the matcha and white chocolate sauce.

This was a match made in heaven – the authentic earthy taste of the matcha perfectly complemented the subtle and mild flavours of the creamy white chocolate sauce.

To top it off, the addition of biscuit crumbs added a delightful crunch that elevated the texture. Leave it to Lukumades to come up with such an unexpected pairing.

Not only do these doughnuts taste amazing, but its vibrant appearance is perfect for sharing on Instagram and making your followers drool with envy.

Speaking of the doughnuts, they were something special too. Unlike traditional American doughnuts, these Loukoumades are lighter and airier, which means you can indulge without feeling stuffed.

Hours of recipe testing helped Lukumades achieve the perfect balance of a golden crunch and fluffy dough.

It was the uniqueness of this dessert that caught the attention of two Malaysian friends, Kenneth Chuah and Joey Chew, whose love for Lukumades was born during their time studying in Melbourne.

“After we tried these desserts just once, we were hooked. We were going to Lukumades almost every day because we’ve never eaten something like this back home,” said Chuah.

Now, these customers have become the owners of the Subang franchise store and continue to share their love for Lukumades through their high-quality ingredients and dynamic menu.

Their commitment to quality was evident in the next sample, featuring three sauce combinations that screamed richness.

Of the three sauces, the thick dark chocolate sauce was exceptional. The high-quality cocoa gave it a deep and intense flavour that every chocolate lover craves, without overpowering the flavour of the doughnuts.

“We only use imported European chocolate because it really does make a difference in terms of quality,” said Chuah.

The biscoff sauce, a local favourite, had a warm and comforting flavour with hints of cinnamon and caramel that perfectly complemented the dark and white chocolate sauces.

And, it’s important to note that here at Lukumades they’re very generous with their sauces and toppings. Every bite of these dough balls was coated in a silky layer of flavour.

For those looking for something unique, their Ramadan date sauce is a must-try.

The flavour of the dates is evident with each bite, and the honey-like consistency of the sauce is a refreshing pairing with the warm buttery dough balls. And, don’t miss out on adding crunchy peanuts as the perfect topping.

Finally, while this may come as a surprise, the cold brew citrus tea at Lukumades is absolutely spectacular. Unlike most iced teas that can be too sweet, this one was first-class.

The cold brew method produced a smooth and complex flavour, while the added citrus perks you up! The bit of foam on top rounded off the experience.
