That is precisely why Bu Tian Desserts, located in Kuchai Lama, is slowly but surely drawing in matcha lovers to savour its sweet treats when tea time rolls around.
Founded by Yeo Suan Ning along with her two elder sisters, their story first started during the pandemic.
“Baking was just a hobby for us at the beginning, and during lockdown we were fulfilling small orders for egg tarts, pineapple tarts and so on,” the 24-year-old shared with FMT.

When they began creating new recipes that required more space than what their home kitchen could afford, they rented the kitchen next to their present café.
Yeo said it wasn’t her intention to open a café, but as their customer base started to grow while working from home, it became the next logical step.
What prompted the switch to Japanese tea-oriented desserts then?
It was the café that they initially supplied their pastries to that gave them the nudge they needed, according to Yeo. It was the right call as Bu Tian has successfully carved a name for itself in the industry since its inception last July.

An impressive feat it is, since none of the sisters were professionally-trained bakers, equipped with nothing but their perseverance and hard work.
The name of their café came to them while café hopping one day. They realised that the words “not too sweet” was often being thrown around by other customers, hence the inspiration for them to make their creations less sugary.
Not one to leave tasty desserts untested, FMT paid a visit to the café recently.

The star here is definitely their Japanese tea sandwich cookies. The delicious chocolate filling is sandwiched between two crispy biscuits, which offer a crunchy bite that’s sweet with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Their box set of three or six offers the trio of matcha, hojicha and genmaicha flavours. A tip from Yeo: they taste their best when chilled, as the texture of the filling is similar to ice cream.

Another crowd favourite is the Matcha cake. Consisting of three layers, the brownie-textured base is complimented well by the matcha flavoured chocolate in the middle and topped with matcha cream which creates a perfect symphony on your taste buds.

If you’re looking for something more unique, go for their moon tarts. Not to be confused with the sweet moon cakes of the mid-autumn festival, this delicious dessert proves to be a well-rounded treat.
Offering the classic trio of flavours like the sandwich cookies, these tarts are creamy and smooth with a crunchy tart base.

Of course, you need to wash all that down with tea, right? The mitsu kukicha has got you covered.
Made from green tea stems, stalks and twigs instead of leaves, it has a nectar-like sweetness with a mint finish. Along with its floral fragrance, this cuppa is a delight for tea connoisseurs.
The Yuri matcha latte here is not to be missed for coffee lovers. Using artisan green tea powder from the famous supplier Niko Neko Matcha (as do all their products), this drink offers an extra umami flavour to your average latte, fulfilling one’s caffeine cravings with style.
So, if you consider yourself a matcha lover, do include Bu Tian Desserts on your next café outing. Its minimalist interior and plentiful not-too-sweet treat selections are a winning combination for a chill afternoon while you lose yourself in a good book.
