Choices, choices — curtains, drapes, blinds or shades?

Choices, choices — curtains, drapes, blinds or shades?

With the vast array of window treatments available, it can be hard to choose. Here is a guide to help home decorators through the maze.

Wondering how to cover up your windows? Luckily there are many different options, including curtains, drapes, blinds and shades.

Modern homes in Malaysia have larger windows than older homes, which has its pros and cons. Large windows let in more natural light and offer a panoramic view. But they also let in more heat.

There are many options for window treatments that can solve these problems, such as curtains, drapes, blinds and shades. It is important to choose a window treatment that gives the room the desired look and feel.

  • Curtains

Curtains are lightweight fabric panels typically sold in pairs in a variety of colours, patterns, lengths and fabrics.

Most curtains have header tapes where four-prong curtain hooks hang on the loops of a curtain track, or curtains with holes or rings that can slide onto a rod.

Advantages: Curtains come in a myriad of patterns, lengths, and colours to make each home unique.

Disadvantages: Curtains take up more space than blinds, making a room appear smaller. Curtains can also be expensive.

  • Drapes

Drapes are similar to curtains but are lined to block out sunlight and are floor-length or longer.

Drapes are generally made from thicker, more expensive materials such as velvet, damask or silk and give a room a touch of elegance, with dense patterns for a classy look. They normally hang from rods.

Dual-layered drapery — an inner sheer for daytime and outer, heavy drapes — allows light in while maintaining privacy.

Advantages: Drapes cancel out noise and can be used to black out a room while giving a luxurious feel.

Disadvantages: Drapery is expensive. Because of their length, drapes can be impractical with children and pets in the house. Thick drapes can prevent air circulation, which can be uncomfortable in the heat.

  • Blinds

Blinds are made with long, thin, stiff slats and have a mechanism that angles them in unison, allowing light to enter through the gaps. They are usually made of wood, PVC or aluminium. Blinds control light flow while maintaining privacy.

Advantages: Blinds are cost-effective if one is renting or does not want the bulk of curtains or drapes. They are practical and durable in the long run as they are made of hard materials.

Disadvantages: It is tedious to clean blinds — each slat must be wiped down. Blinds do not fit in a traditional or classical décor. Blind cords can get tangled and stuck.

  • Shades

A shade is a fabric panel that comes in multiple lengths, styles and patterns. The mechanism is similar to that of blinds but it lifts the fabric.

They are less flexible in terms of light since they either black out the room or allow light to enter completely.

Advantages: Blinds are good blackout shades and offer more privacy. With developments in technology, energy-efficient shades are available that keep the hot air outside while maintaining the chill air within.

Disadvantages: There is almost no light control with shades. Like blinds, the mechanism can get stuck and since most shades are made of cloth, they need cleaning as well.
