Six films to catch in theaters this Raya

This Raya, a family trip to the cinema might just prove to be a great way to spend the holiday.

Back in the kampung for Hari Raya but already finding yourself restless after feasting on Raya goodies? Rather than fiddle with your handphone, why not catch some of the great films playing now that you can watch with the entire family!

1. Aladdin

“I can show you the world; shining, shimmering, splendid.” The House of Mouse certainly has an understanding of how to strum the strings of nostalgia.

Aladdin is a family-friendly movie that not only adapts the plot of the original 1992 film but also throws in new songs and characters.

The latest in the line of live-action remakes by Disney, this Guy Ritchie film tells the classic tale of a street urchin changing his life around when he comes across a magic lamp housing an all-powerful genie.

2. Brightburn

Almost everyone and their grandmother knows the story of Clark Kent, how he was adopted by the Kent family despite his alien origins and how his life in Smallville, Kansas led him to become Superman, the paragon of justice with a heart of gold.

But what if instead of being a goody-two-shoes boy scout, Clark was a child psychopath with the morality of a cold-blooded serial killer?

Brightburn, produced by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn, explores this alternate reality where a mother discovers that her beloved adopted son have superpowers but lacks the moral compass to use his powers for a noble cause.

3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

He’s big. He’s loud. He’s angry. The iconic Japanese kaiju stomps his way onto the silver screen once more after his debut film in 2014.

Directed and written by Michael Dougherty, this film features the first appearance of monsters other than Godzilla from the original Japanese Toho films in the American franchise.

4. John Wick 3: Parabellum

Who would have thought that the nerdy bloke from the Bill and Ted comedy series would grow up to become the most feared killer in a world where death is common and there are assassins hiding in every bush and haystack?

The third of the John Wick films, this film has the titular character played by Keanu Reeves on the run after being excommunicated for his actions in the previous film.

With every assassin literally gunning for him, John has to find allies wherever he can simply for his own survival. Whether he will find salvation or at the very least, a safe place to keep his dog, is up in the air.

5. Avengers: Endgame

This Raya should be the best time to watch the blockbuster of the year as theaters probably will be less packed due to the holidays.

Set directly after the morbid events of Avengers: Infinity War, the remaining Avengers have to recover from the devastating defeat dealt to them by the Mad Titan, Thanos, and find a way to reverse the irreversible.

The battle may have been lost, but the war is far from over. Take a toilet break before entering the theater. This movie takes three hours.

6. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Hearing an adorable electric mouse speaking with the same voice of a certain katana-wielding lunatic mercenary is a little jarring. But Ryan Reynolds does admirably in the film.

He is what makes the film a mysteriously fun flick. In this film by Rob Letterman, Tim Goodman, the son of a famed and vanished detective must ally with a particularly witty Pikachu to recover his father and uncover the truth behind the strange incidents engulfing the city.

Made with love for fans of the Pokémon series, this film is still very much relevant to newcomers to the franchise.
