Encore Melaka is an impressive Melaka-themed cultural song and dance performance using state-of-the-art theatrical techniques in a modern purpose-built rotating theatre.

The show was created by Impression Wonders Arts Development Co Ltd, the Chinese company involved in the Beijing Olympics opening and closing shows among other events.

Projection mapping technology is used to create stunning visual effects to complement the props and traditional costumes of the 200-strong cast of local performers.

The theatre and building

The most unusual thing about this show is that the 2,000-seat auditorium rotates 360 degrees enabling the audience to face multiple stages from close up.

The building is an imposing new landmark on the Melaka skyline, looking something like a vast melting ice cube. The exterior skin of the building is covered in white porcelain tiles, arranged like snake scales while the “melting parts” are made of translucent plastic material which are illuminated in various shades of blue at night.

It is built on reclaimed land next to a man-made beach overlooking the Straits of Malacca. The whole district is called Impression City, planned to be a 138-acre property project by developers Yong Tai Berhad.

While most people are impressed with the spectacle and the setting, some are confused with the storyline which selects highlights from 600 years of Melaka’s complicated history in 70 minutes.
