When in Penang and craving for some truly rustic street food, head to No 5 Char Koay Teow at Macalister Road. The shop may not look fancy, but you are sure to get a hearty meal here, packed with goodness and delicious on the tastebuds too.

No 5 Char Koay Teow shares the same premise with a mixed-rice shop located right at the corner of Macalister Road and Lorong Kinta.

It is a perfectly walkable distance from Komtar, and just a stone’s throw away from the famous New Lane street hawker centre.

There are two versions of Char Koay Teow here – a normal plate at RM5.50, and the “big prawn + mantis prawn” version at RM9.50. You can’t go wrong with either as both are cooked to perfection with cockles, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, chives, egg, and served on a sheet of fragrant banana leaf.

The Char Koay Teow here also has plenty of good “wok hei” with prawns and Koay Teow just ever so slightly charred.

The egg is taken off the wok while the yoke’s still a little runny, giving the entire plate of noodles a moist and flavourful finish.

The normal version is served with plenty of decent-sized prawns, while the deluxe version really pushes it up a notch with huge tiger prawns and bits of mantis prawn throw into the mix. Both versions get the thumbs-up.

If you’re a Char Koay Teow fan, you owe it to yourself to give this stall a try. Only one drawback – waiting time can be a little long even when customer volume isn’t particularly high.
