Justin Theroux is to play the role of the scruffy mongrel Tramp in an upcoming live-action and CGI reworking of 1995 animated classic “Lady and the Tramp.”

According to Collider, he is in the final stages of contract negotiations with Disney to voice Tramp; the studio has landed on Ashley Jensen of “Ugly Betty” and “Agatha Raisin” as Jackie, a close friend of Lady, who is yet to be cast.

As the story goes, Lady is a prim, proper, and well-kept spaniel who meets Tramp, a raggedy, scrappy stray mutt; despite their different backgrounds, they fall for each other and negotiate the difficulties of a new baby in Lady’s owners’ family and the ever-vigilant city dog catchers.

Disney has been in the business of reviving some of its classic favourites since 2014’s wildly successful Sleeping Beauty remake, “Maleficent,” which was followed by “Cinderella,” “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast” in the three years following.

“Lady and the Tramp” is as yet updated, though Disney’s upcoming slate includes Winnie the Pooh pivot “Christopher Robin” in August and “Mary Poppins Returns” in December of 2018, “Dumbo,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” in 2019, and then “Mulan” and “Maleficent II” in 2020.

Following his key role over all three seasons of HBO drama “The Leftovers,” Justin Theroux went on to voice a character in “The Lego Ninjago Movie” and co-star in Netflix sci-fi thriller “Mute.”

Upcoming appearances over the rest of 2018 include those in August’s action comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” December’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg legal biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Transformers spin-off “Bumblebee,” and a return to Netflix in comic drama “Maniac.”
