Billed as an “ultra-luxury” music festival, with promotion from social media’s biggest influencers like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, Fyre was the brainchild of entrepreneur Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule.
The docuseries will focus on what exactly went wrong with the festival, examining the behind-the-scenes of the hoax through leaked documents, emails, and recordings.
The as-yet-untitled series will feature interviews with local Bahamians, stranded festival-goers, vendors and investors.
After having spent thousands of dollars for tickets and transportation, ticket-holders arrived in the Bahamas to find dinky tents (rather than promised luxury cabanas), cheese sandwiches (instead of chef-prepared meals as advertised) and a phantom musical lineup after bands–including Major Lazer and Blink-182–canceled appearances due to lack of payment and organization.
McFarland and his Fyre Media face over US$100 million in lawsuits.
McFarland pleaded guilty in March to misleading investors and wire fraud; he faces up to 120 months in prison and will be sentenced on June 21st.
