PETALING JAYA:
Two national mixed doubles pairs cleared the opening round at the Swiss Open badminton championship early this morning.

Top seeds Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai took just 28 minutes to defeat lower-ranked Taiwanese pair Chen Zhi Ray-Yang Ching Tun 21-8, 21-18 in Basel, Switzerland.

The world No. 3 Malaysians face a tough second round match against Thai pair Ruttanapak Oupthong-Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat.

Although Ruttanapak-Jhenicha are ranked No. 17, they have been playing well in recent tournaments. Both pairs have won once each in their two encounters so far.

In another match, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien defeated Macao’s Leong Lok Chong-Ng Weng Chi 21-14, 21-10 in just 27 minutes.

The Malaysian duo will be up against the formidable fourth-seeded pair from France, Delphine Delrue-Thom Gicquel, in the next round.

Other Malaysians through to the last 16 are men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao, who will face Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, and women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei, who will take on Thai player Supanida Katethong.
