BATU KAWAN:
US-based computer memory and computer data storage producer Micron Technology Inc launched a state-of-the-art assembly and testing facility at Batu Kawan Industrial Park today.

It is the second manufacturing plant established by Micron in Penang after its first facility at the Perai Industrial Area in 2015.

Amarjit Sandhu, Micron’s corporate vice-president of assembly and testing for NAND operations, said the new facility will enable the company to deliver quality products to its customers on time, with reduced cycle times and at scale.

“This expansion reflects our unwavering dedication to advancing semiconductor development and manufacturing excellence,” he said at the inauguration ceremony.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated at the ceremony, congratulated Micron for its success in establishing two manufacturing plants in the state, with investments valued at up to US$2 billion (RM9.46 billion) and 4,500 job opportunities created.

“This is a classic example of what we (Penang) are talking about, (which is that) we welcome high-quality investments that can create high-value jobs,” he told reporters later.

“It will instil confidence that Penang, and Malaysia in general, are an attractive investment destination, particularly for the electric and electronic sector.

“Announcing an investment is one thing. Implementing and seeing it happen, as I have witnessed today, is something that we have always wanted to achieve. Our implementation achievement rate is as high as over 90%.”

Chow, who is also the Batu Kawan MP, said the state government looks forward to seeing Micron’s future expansion in Penang.

“We still have land available on this side (mainland Penang). Maybe we can have buildings number three and four in the next five years,” he said.
