FINLAND 0 BELGIUM 2
RUSSIA 1 DENMARK 4

Football is not a game, it’s an emotion they say. And so it proved as Denmark’s players honoured their pledge to teammate Christian Eriksen by ripping apart a shellshocked Russia to qualify for the knockout phase as Group B runners-up. So inspired were the Danes that they became the first team in competition history to make it out of their group after losing the first two games. Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite later tweeted: “What a night. This one is for you Christian Eriksen. Let’s go for more.” Next up: The Welsh Dragons in the last 16.

FUN FACT: After scoring twice against North Macedonia, Gini Wijnaldum now has one goal more (25) than the legendary Marco van Basten for Holland.

TONIGHT …

CROATIA vs SCOTLAND
Hampden Park, Glasgow, 3am

Scotland have not got past the group stage in 10 previous major tournaments but can still finish as high as second in Group D on goal difference if they win and England lose. A draw would knock both teams out but the Scots can take encouragement from the fact they are unbeaten in their last five matches against tonight’s opponents.

CZECH REPUBLIC vs ENGLAND
Wembley, London, 3am

Both teams have their place in the round of 16 confirmed after last night’s results but England would still want to win the group to keep playing at Wembley. Czech Republic, meanwhile, will hope to better their record of having never won on English soil.
