A lot of things change during times of crisis. Since the onslaught of the pandemic earlier this year, many people’s lives have turned topsy-turvy.
While the degree of change varies, there are differences in eating habits, sleeping patterns, communication, relationships and, most importantly, how all that extra time at home is spent.
Plenty of research has found that people have picked up the habit of reading again as a means of security and safety – including the ones who used to be avid readers but have since been swept away by the digital world.

That being said, it’s also equally easy to be swept away by the number of reading options available. But, who better to point readers in the right direction than the founders of BookXcess, Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng?
The couple behind Malaysia’s best and biggest bookstore shared their list of recommended reads with FMT during an earlier chat, some of which you can add to your reading list too.

1. How To Drive by Ben Collins
As a fan of cars, Yap recommends this book as the author shares his experience in racing, stunt-work and scientific knowledge in his attempt to teach readers the art of driving.
The tips and insight included in this book will make driving safer, economical and fun.
2. Shoe Dog by Phil Knight
Yap found that reading Phil Knight’s story about setting up Nike and going through many struggles along the way is very relatable.
“Phil Knight felt a good product would sell itself and I believe this as well. Books are the best product since it provides us with knowledge. Hence, this is the reason we are here, we’re about spreading the joy of reading.”
3. Nevertheless by Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin brings a lot of energy, charm and wit to his roles and Yap has been a fan of his for a long time now.
“In this book, he was being open and honest which is something rare among actor biographies. He neither makes excuses for nor glosses over the unfortunate decisions he’s made,” said Yap.

4. If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon
“This book is what got me into reading, and I am forever thankful to my friend for lending me this book when we were in school,” shared Ng, who grew up in a non-English speaking household with no books.
As the very first novel that she read cover to cover, Ng remarked that every episode in this book leaves the readers with no time for guessing, keeping them engaged enough to enjoy the twists.
5. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
James Herriot is one of Ng’s favourite authors. Although she has a collection of his books, she recommends this one the most.
“I first read them all many years ago and was intrigued by the many ups and downs of a country vet’s life back in the days before and after World War II,” said Ng, who added that every James Herriot book has made her laugh as well as reduced her to tears.
6. The First Phone Call from Heaven by Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom’s books tend to grapple with human emotions, faith and redemption, and this book is no different.
“He has a talent for writing books that are heartfelt and touching,” she said, before sharing a quote from the book that stood out to her, which read: “There are two stories for every life; the one you live and the one others tell.”

Oprah Winfrey The Wisdom of Sundays: Life-Changing Insights From Super Soul Conversations with Oprah
Admitting that she keeps a whole stack of these as it makes the best and thoughtful gift, Ng has read this book twice and doesn’t think she’ll stop there.
“This book is overall beautiful and very inspirational. It’s the one book the soul needs especially when you are feeling lost and need some clarity to move forward,” said Ng.
Yap, on the other hand, shared that there were some interesting conversations in this book that he found intriguing.
“While I don’t agree with everything that was said, there are some messages here that would relate to different people at different times of their lives.
“This book gives a person the chance to see things from different perspectives and take into account their thought processes and actions,” said Yap.
Well, there you have it. In case you run out of Netflix series to watch or are just plain bored at home, give some of these books a read.
