The affected cars are those built from 2012 to end-August 2018, and the service fix is part of a global initiative for cars equipped with Takata airbags, it said.
The action follows a Defect Information Report (DIR) issued by the US National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration that requires the replacement of non-desiccated passenger inflators, which Proton already started replacing from January 2019.
“There are 6,342 units affected and as at Aug 18 this year, our service outlets have replaced 5,625 units or 87.5% of the affected units,” said Proton Edar Sdn Bhd CEO Roslan Abdullah.
Roslan reassured all customers that the exercise does not affect any other Proton models as they use airbags supplied by a different vendor.
He said replacement of the inflator will take about one hour and will be performed free of charge.
