KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales value increased 9.6% year-on-year in June 2018 to RM106.1 billion, said the Statistics Department.

In a statement today, chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the expansion was supported by growth in retail trade and motor vehicles at 12.1% and 10.1%, respectively.

“The higher sales value was boosted by zero-rating the goods and services tax (GST) starting June 1, the Hari Raya festive period and the Mega Sale Carnival held from June 1-30,” he said.

For the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2018), the volume index of wholesale and retail trade expanded 7% to 166.5 points compared with Q2 2017.

He said the growth was driven by the 8.1% expansion in retail trade, while wholesale trade and motor vehicles rose by 6.9% and 3.5%, respectively.
