PHNOM PENH:
The body of a missing French backpacker has been found in Cambodia, police told AFP today, saying she is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The 23-year-old, named by French media as Lisa Girard-Fabre, from southwest France, was found dead near Siem Reap, the main city for Cambodia’s famed Angkor Wat temple complex.

Lieutenant colonel Sok Meng Eang from Siem Reap police told AFP that the woman was found dead in a dried canal yesterday after she had been missing for two days.

“Police found her body in a dried canal near Siem Reap city yesterday,” he said.

An autopsy found that she died from a cardiac arrest and her body has been given to the French embassy, he said. It is expected to be repatriated in the coming days.

“There were no injuries on her body or any sign of abuse against her,” Sok Meng Eang said, adding that her belongings, including her phone, were found at the site and that her clothes were in good condition.

French newspaper Depeche du Midi reported that the woman went missing after going running on her own.

She arrived in Cambodia in 2024 after travelling overland from France, the paper said.
