PETALING JAYA:
YouTube is introducing stricter regulations on online gambling content, reinforcing its efforts to create a safer platform, particularly for younger users.

The platform announced on Tuesday that effective March 19, it would ban content that directs users to “unapproved” gambling websites through links, images, text, logos, or verbal references.

YouTube defines unapproved sites as those that do not comply with local legal requirements or have not been reviewed by YouTube or its parent company, Google.

“YouTube is committed to supporting creators while ensuring a safe and responsible platform for everyone,” a Google representative said in an announcement on YouTube’s support page.

While online sports betting and depictions of in-person gambling remain unaffected, online casino content that does not violate YouTube’s community guidelines may still be age-restricted.

This means that such videos will only be accessible to signed-in users above the age of 18.

YouTube banned gambling masthead ads in 2021 while Twitch restricted streams featuring slots, roulette, or dice gambling sites in 2022.

Last month, Google announced that it would test a machine learning model for age estimation, enabling platforms like YouTube to deliver age-appropriate content.

Tuesday’s announcement is the latest in a series of content moderation updates by YouTube.

The platform previously removed content featuring medical misinformation, such as false claims about vaccines and abortion, as well as harmful content related to eating disorders.
