BRUSSELS: One person died after a shooting in Brussels that was likely linked to clashes between rival drug gangs, the local prosecutor’s office said today, highlighting rising crime in the Belgian capital city which also hosts the main EU institutions.
“There was a shooting this morning in Anderlecht. One person died in the incident. It is probably linked to rival drug gangs,” said a spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
The fatal shooting today followed another shooting on Wednesday in Brussels, which has been plagued by drug gang violence in recent years.
While nobody was injured in Wednesday’s shooting incident, it led to a brief shutdown of many Brussels metro stations as police hunted the suspects.
The Brussels prosecutor’s office said it would investigate to see if today’s fatal shooting was linked to the incident earlier in the week.
