Serbia arrests 11 over railway station roof collapse

The disaster triggered protests, with many blaming it on corruption and nepotism.

BELGRADE:
The high prosecutors office in the Serbian city of Novi Sad said today that 11 people were arrested in connection with the collapse of a railway station roof earlier this month that has left 15 people dead.

The recently renovated roof of the station in the northern city collapsed on Nov 1, killing 14 at the time and injuring three.

On Sunday, one of the injured died, bringing total fatalities to 15.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the 11 were arrested for committing criminal acts against public safety following interrogation of a number of citizens and expert analysis of the incident.

The statement only provided the initials of those arrested.

The disaster triggered a wave of protests in Serbia, with protesters blaming the accident on corruption and nepotism among the ruling coalition.
