MALLORCA:
Spanish police said on Friday that they found the body of a 32-year-old British hiker who went missing with his partner after flash floods.

The British couple were hiking in the Torrent de Pareis canyon area on the holiday island of Mallorca on Tuesday when heavy rain caused a nearby river to overflow.

Police recovered the body of one of the missing, a 26-year-old woman, on Wednesday.

“Police found the lifeless body of the young British man who disappeared last Tuesday while hiking in the Torrent de Pareis with a group of friends and his partner,” said the Guardia Civil police force.

A police helicopter spotted the body “half-submerged in an area where branches and rocks had accumulated” on Friday and officers on the ground were dispatched to recover it, the police added.

The search was complicated by rough weather on the island, which had been lashed by heavy rains and wind gusts of over 120kph.

Ten other tourists trapped by the floods on Tuesday were rescued, police said.

The Mediterranean island, especially popular with German and British tourists, is one of Europe’s most visited destinations.
