Tropical Storm Pilar’s intense rainfall led to two fatalities in El Salvador, according to authorities, as the National Hurricane Center warned today that the storm could continue causing flash floods in parts of Central America.

Fermin Perez, the assistant director of El Salvador’s civil defence office, confirmed that the bodies of a 24-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman from the province of La Union had been found. Both individuals were swept away by surging streams.

NHC said that the tropical storm was now advancing east-northeast at close to 6kph. According to NHC’s forecast track, “Pilar could be approaching the coast of El Salvador or Nicaragua late today through early Wednesday, though the core of the system is expected to remain offshore”.

Storm Pilar has maximum sustained winds remain near 85kph with higher gusts, the centre added, and is expected to produce a total rainfall of 12cm to 25cm, with local amounts of 38cm, over parts of Central America.
