Bombs damage two statues at Thailand’s popular Samila Beach

No Malaysian was injured in the bomb blasts at the popular tourist spot which damaged the Golden Mermaid and the Cat and Mouse statues.

Two bombs rocked the popular Samila Beach here Wednesday night, causing damage to the famous Golden Mermaid statue and the Cat and Mouse sculpture.

Songkhla provincial governor Wiranan Penjang said no one was injured in the incident which happened at 10 pm (11 pm Malaysian time) at the beach which is popular among local and foreign tourists, including Malaysians.

The second of the bombs split the base of the mermaid statue, he said.

The first bomb exploded about 10 minutes earlier at the cat and mouse sculpture about 200m away from the mermaid statue, he added.

Wiranan said a forensics team would conduct a thorough inspection at the two locations which have since been closed to visitors.

The Malaysian consul-general in Songkhla, Mohd Afandi Abu Bakar, when contacted, said no Malaysian was injured in the incident.
