JAKARTA:
Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Thursday the government is aiming to persuade exporters to keep their earnings onshore and convert them into local currency, rather than making it mandatory.

“I am hoping earnings can be saved onshore and converted to rupiah,” Indrawati told reporters, when asked about a plan announced by the trade minister to make exporters of some commodities keep half of their proceeds onshore for a minimum of six months and convert them to rupiah.

There has been some confusion over the plan. A Bank Indonesia deputy governor told Reuters on Tuesday the central bank had no such plan.
