PETALING JAYA: Motorists who have no regards for their fellow road users and switch on their car lights at full beam at night, are getting their full comeuppance in Shenzen, a city in southern China.

The police in Shenzen have introduced a new form of punishment for such drivers, forcing them to stare into powerful headlights themselves, China’s Xinhua news agency reported today.

Those who are caught with their lights on full beam under normal driving conditions in the city will be made to sit on a stool and stare into the blinding headlights for 60 seconds.

The offenders will also be fined 300 yuan (RM185) and made to repeatedly recite regulations on when headlights can be put safely on full beam, according to Xinhua.

There have been many reports of accidents caused by the inappropriate use of high beams by some errant motorists.

Several fatalities have also occurred, as a result of such traffic accidents, when drivers were dazzled by bright, full beam headlights.

Previously, police had just docked points from a driver’s license aside from the fine.

The new form of punishment by the police has been received positively on social media with most people being favourable of their unconventional method.

“I feel like I’m seeing the light of God whenever my eyes are flashed by high beam lights of BMWs on traffic lanes,” one person wrote on Weibo.
