Although she successfully underwent surgery at seven months old, she now requires a repeat procedure as the hole in her heart has reopened. The surgery will cost RM50,000.

ASD is a birth defect caused by an abnormal opening in the dividing wall of the upper chambers of the heart, known as the atria. As such, Nur Jannah is at great risk of heart failure.

Her mother, 36-year-old Intan Norashikin, is a housewife who looks after Nur Jannah and her younger sister, while her father, Mohd Nurzul, 34, is a deliveryman who works for a mechanical parts company.

As the sole breadwinner, the family depends on Mohd Nurzul’s limited income for household expenses and necessities.

The couple has reached out to Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Da Ai, a non-governmental organisation that helps the disabled and special-needs individuals through crowdfunding and other means.

Case worker Jessica Tan told FMT that the NGO hopes to raise funds to cover the entire cost of the surgery at a private hospital.

As of press time, they have yet to calculate the amount they have thus far received, but are nevertheless hoping for more generous contributions from the public towards Nur Jannah’s plight.

“Mohd Nurzul had asked for help from other organisations, but many turned a deaf ear to his pleas,” Tan added.

“He just wants to do his best to help his older daughter so she can have a better quality of life.”
