A location of great historical significance and popularly known for being a haven for rest and relaxation, Langkawi is one of the top tourist destinations in Malaysia.

That said, if you’re the kind who likes a holiday filled with physical activity and thrilling experiences, the following recommendations – in addition to the ones provided yesterday – will certainly be up your alley.

1. Hiking and cycling

The island is truly blessed with thick and lush tropical rainforests that are perfect for newbie and experienced hikers alike. Embark on a journey amidst greenery that will help you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

For avid pedallists, here’s a fun fact: you can cycle the entirety of the island without repeating any of the routes – a total distance of some 180km, give or take.

Novice cyclists, on the other hand, are able to enjoy the scenic routes of rubber, coconut and paddy plantations without covering the entire island, and perhaps even spot some local wildlife along the way.

2. Snorkelling and diving

Explore the Andaman sea through snorkelling and diving, with many sites situated at the small islands in the Chenang area. Suitable for beginners and experienced divers alike, visitors are able to see turtles, corals, seahorses, and other marine creatures.

Plus, visit Pulau Pasir to get a glimpse of anchored underwater sculptures – an initiative by the Langkawi Development Authority and National Art Gallery to support more green and community-based tourism activities.

Snorkelling, too, is a must-do activity. At Pulau Payar, experts will guide you through the entire process, ensuring a smooth and safe experience as you partake of the picturesque scenery comprising coastal inlets, tranquil waters, and clear horizons.

3. Caving and bird watching

Langkawi is home to some of the most stunning cave formations in Southeast Asia. If you enjoy exploring cave systems, check out the unique geological formations here – created millions of years ago – that have been awarded Unesco World Heritage Geopark status.

Several caves located in steep cliffs and rainforests are difficult to access, let alone explore. Others, however, are frequented by curious visitors and explorers – some on foot, others via boat. Traverse through these caverns on water while unique and awesome limestone formations hang overhead!

Thanks to the mild yet consistent temperature, Langkawi is also popular as a destination for birding. Over 200 species can be found on the island – some migratory, others native – making this a haven for bird watchers.

4. Jungle trekking and nature walking

Go on an expedition through the luscious jungles of Langkawi. Skytrail Jungle Trekking provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to scale Gunung Machinchang, Malaysia’s oldest mountain range and home to one of the world’s most ancient rainforests.

The 45-minute hike allows you to see Langkawi’s magnificent surroundings with an expert guide, in addition to going on an exciting cable-car ride. At the top, catch spectacular panoramic views of the rainforest, Andaman sea, and the whole island – an experience worth cherishing forever.

5. Fishing and squid jigging

To truly experience the beauty of Langkawi, go on a fishing trip. Deep-sea and recreational fishing are both available for avid anglers, promising a variety of catches including groupers, snappers, barracudas, wahoos, and many more.

And then there’s squid jigging, an activity usually done at night using glow-in-the-dark features attached to wire hooks to lure squid.

Soak in the breathtaking views of dawn and dusk across Pekan Rabu and, before returning to your accommodation, enjoy swimming and a barbecue on the beach.
