Looking for the ultimate tropical escape in Malaysia? Langkawi is, by a long shot, the main contender. Surrounded by turquoise waters and home to the most lovely cascades and forest valleys in the world, Langkawi is brimming with hidden fortunes that promise an epic escape.

It’s easy to see why this destination has rapidly turned into one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist hotspots. Here are five places you should visit if you find yourself on this treasured island – and tune in tomorrow for part two of this article!

1. Dataran Helang

Did you know the words “helang” and “kawi” (reddish-brown) inspired the island’s name? As such, Dataran Helang is the home of a commanding 12m-high Eagle statue, overlooking the Kuah Jetty and greeting visitors who arrive on the island.

With a shopping centre nearby, this is a popular picture-taking spot among tourists.

2. Makam Mahsuri

This mausoleum honours the legendary folk story of Mahsuri Pandak Mayah. Her beauty was the envy of her sister-in law, who started a rumour accusing Mahsuri of being unfaithful to her husband.

Condemned to execution without trial, Mahsuri swore her innocence as she laid a curse condemning the island to go through a barren spell for seven generations. It proved to, perhaps, be true, as only recently has Langkawi come out of its dry spell to become a popular tourist attraction.

Learn more amidst classical Malay architecture at the wooden houses that act as a mini museum displaying some of Mahsuri’s jewels, as well as the weapon used to execute her. Also worth a visit is Mahsuri’s tomb, surrounded by greenery with a description of her destiny.

3. Cable car

At 708m above sea level, you will be blessed with views of the entire island and even southern Thailand! Hailed as the steepest cable-car ride in the world, this attraction provides 360° panoramic views of massive rock towers, verdant forests, and stunning ridges.

Partake in the Langkawi Skyrail by joining the jungle-trekking tour located at the medium station on the Langkawi Skybridge, a one-of-a-kind curved bridge at the highest point of Gunung Machinchang.

4. Underwater World Langkawi

Attractions here include the tropical rainforest and river ecosystem, the temperate and sub-antarctic section, as well as the seashell display, koi pond, and coral reef exhibit.

Featuring an enormous 15m-long walk-through tunnel, visitors can expect an up close-and-personal time with the sea creatures.

As a bonus, the oceanarium’s location close to a shopping centre and bistro also means guests are provided with a one-stop shopping, eating and entertainment package.

5. Fire Show @ Cenang Beach
