PETALING JAYA:
Clarice – fondly called “Queen Clarice” by her rescuers – is only three years old but has already had to face many challenges in her short doggy life.

Clarice was a stray on the streets of Puchong, Selangor, when Nicole-Ann Thomas and Caroline Louise Thomas received a phone call asking them to rescue her.

“We do not know the exact timeline of events but, based on what a kind uncle nearby told us, Clarice was run over by a reckless driver, which left her with injuries,” Caroline told FMT.

When she was hit, Clarice’s spine and hind legs bore most of the brunt. Subsequently, she was seen dragging her hind legs to get around.

“The uncle was kind enough to build her a makeshift shelter while he waited for help to arrive,” Caroline added.

When Nicole and Caroline showed up to rescue Clarice, they found out she was also pregnant. The pair quickly brought her to a veterinary clinic in Puchong for treatment.

Not long after, Clarice gave birth to eight puppies. However, due to her injuries, some of the pups were stillborn, while a few died shortly after coming into the world.

“Her puppies had to be taken away from her immediately after she delivered, as Clarice was not able to nurse them in her condition,” Nicole revealed.

“In the end, three out of eight survived, and we were able to find someone who was willing to foster them until they could be adopted.”

Two of the puppies are now healthy and happy in their forever homes. Sadly, the third passed away suddenly a few weeks after he’d been born.

Meanwhile, mummy Clarice was taken to a rehabilitation centre in Subang Jaya, where the doctor advised that her leg be amputated to ensure she would live a pain-free life.

“It was decided that the best option was to amputate as, with her dragging her hind leg, her wound would keep opening,” Caroline explained.

Last week, Clarice’s left hind leg was removed at a veterinary practice in Kota Damansara. Being the strong girl that she is, the resilient doggo was up and running again just a week after surgery.

Help, hope and home

Nicole and Caroline have been rescuing stray animals around their neighbourhoods for many years now. “We do as much as we can to help dogs and cats in need,” Caroline said.

Most of the time, however, they have to dig into their own pockets to assist these animals. As such, they are seeking help from kind-hearted Malaysians to cover the costs of Clarice’s treatment and aftercare.

“With her medication, surgery and rehab, we are looking to raise RM5,000,” Caroline shared. “It is a hefty amount for anyone to pay, so donations of any amount will help.”

With Clarice on the mend, Nicole and Caroline are also desperate to find her a fur-ever home.

“She has two to three weeks of rehab remaining, and after that we hope she will have a home to go to, and not have to go to a shelter.”

The two are looking for someone to adopt Clarice, or at least foster her while they continue finding a home for her.

“She has been through so much already. We just want her to live somewhere she will be happy and safe,” Caroline concluded.

To contribute towards Clarice’s medical and aftercare bills, donations can be made directly to Nicole-Ann Frances Thomas, Maybank account 512295115692.
