Enjoy a great day out, hit a few holes, and help raise money for the shelter's continued operations and new RM3.5 mil facility.

PAWS has been caring for homeless animals since 1987 and has over 500 four-legged residents at its temporary shelter in Ara Damansara.
PETALING JAYA:
Do you enjoy a good game of golf? Aficionados say there’s nothing like spending a day on the course, playing 18 holes, challenging yourself and/or engaging in a friendly competition with others.

And when a golf game has the added benefit of helping those in need, whether two- or four-legged, it’s clearly an event you just can’t say no to!

In line with this, the “PAWS – Better Malaysia Foundation Inaugural Charity Golf 2022” tournament will be held in July to raise funds for the PAWS Animal Welfare Society, so it can keep providing love and care to animals and construct its RM3.5 million new facility.

Fees are RM1,000 for an individual player and RM4,000 for a flight of four players. All donations are tax-deductible under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967.

PAWS has been operating since 1987, taking in unwanted dogs and cats that are vaccinated, dewormed, medicated, neutered, nurtured back to good health, and put up for adoption.

With over 250 dogs and 250 cats in their care, the shelter and all associated costs are funded entirely by donations from the public, as well as proceeds from charitable events.

Last year, the government gazetted the site of PAWS’ former facility – located along the old Subang airport road in Selangor – as “road reserve land”, giving the shelter two months to relocate. PAWS had occupied that location for 34 years.

Subsequently, the non-profit organisation moved its operations to a new plot in Ara Damansara – an empty piece of land divided by a road reserve – where it houses its four-legged residents in a temporary shelter while awaiting its new facility to be built.

Proceeds from the charity golf tournament will go towards the construction of this new facility and PAWS’ continued operations.

Its manager, Edward Lim, recently provided an update on its efforts, saying: “Given the status of our economy, we are lagging in our fundraising with about RM436,550 collected to date out of our RM3.5 million goal.

“I am hoping the economy picks up, and people will contribute generously to the needy animals.”

Besides enjoying a good game of golf, the event includes lunch, cocktails, a talk show, live band, dinner, charity auction, lucky draws, and a closing party. Slots are also available for tournament sponsors.

And even though Lim himself does not play golf, he told FMT that he will definitely be there at the Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Club to participate in the festivities.

So if you’re an avid golfer, why not round up some friends and sign up for a great day out hitting the links? It would certainly be “fur” – or “fore!” – a worthy cause.
