PETALING JAYA:
PapanSouls is back with another adoption drive for the strays of the Papan dumpsite along the Ipoh-Lumut highway.

Sarah Kennedy, a member of the animal rescue organisation, told FMT that despite the team’s best efforts, many continue to leave strays at the dumpsite.

“Development has started and they have cleared portions of the land, but the dumping of the strays still persists,” she said. Just a few days ago, they found eight puppies with no sign of their mother.

This will be the third adoption drive held by PapanSouls since it was founded in 2020, with 41 animals up for adoption in Ipoh this weekend.

“All of them have been vaccinated and many have been neutered as well,” Kennedy said.

The team is collaborating with Noah’s Ark Ipoh Animal Welfare, which will be bringing along 20 kittens looking for fur-ever homes; as well as Protem Sri Sathya Sai Global Organisation Malaysia, which will help them raise awareness on the plight of strays abandoned at the dumpsite.

Furthermore, PapanSouls will be working with independent rescuers – “those in the community who feed strays in their areas and bail dogs out from pounds”.

According to Kennedy, dogs that have been bailed from pounds have to go back to the streets if they do not have homes. Hence, it is important for them to be adopted to be given a second chance.

There have also been issues of poisoning as well as drivers who run over the dogs, making it a challenge for the team to ensure the strays are safe.

On top of which, there have been instances of adopted dogs being returned to them, as was the case following their previous drive.

“It was really heartbreaking to have to bring the dogs back to the safe house, but we were happy to accept them and care for them until we could rehome them again,” Kennedy shared.

A total of 10 dogs found forever homes during PapanSouls’ adoption drive in January, and Kennedy is hopeful they will be able to rehome more this time around.

The team is also working towards a bigger safe house so they can take in and care for a larger number of animals.

“All the dogs are very playful and loving. But due to the limited space, we are unable to bring in all the strays from the dumpsite,” Kennedy said.

“Nevertheless, we continue to go there to feed and play with them every single day.”
