Have your fill of fun, food and adventure at Legoland Hotel

Malaysia’s very own toy-themed resort in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, promises a one-of-a-kind getaway.

JOHOR BAHRU:
The first of its kind in Asia, Legoland Malaysia boosted the appeal of domestic tourism when it opened in November 2013, attracting families to Johor for an overnight adventure that promised to be both entertaining and educational.

Designed to inspire imagination and creativity, Legoland Hotel in Iskandar Puteri is filled with interactive features, from a dragon-guarded entrance to specially themed rooms.

FMT was invited for a weekend stay recently and had a thoroughly good time filled with adventure, food, and – of course – Lego bricks aplenty.

The multicoloured exterior of the hotel catches the eye of everyone who drives past. Whether or not you are a Lego enthusiast, you will certainly appreciate the work that has gone into this spectacular construction made to look like a castle made out of Lego.

At the reception, you will be greeted by two huge sculptures – a pirate ship and a castle – surrounded by Lego bricks. Have fun playing with the toys and taking photos of the “giant playground” before checking in.

If you booked the Adventure suite but arrive at a Pirate-themed hallway, you’re on the wrong floor. (Legoland pic)

There is plenty at this hotel that will impress, but most striking is how much detail has gone into its making. This extends even to the hallways, with each of the seven floors taking on a theme of its own – Adventure, Kingdom, NINJAGO, or Pirate.

The lifts even play music from the “Lego” movies, complete with a disco ball spinning overhead.

The property has seven floors with 263 rooms. Prices fluctuate depending on the season, but should you want to return for another visit, it is best to get a Legoland Annual Pass to access perks and member-only discounts.

The rooms also adhere to the four themes, each heavily decorated to look like it is part of a Lego creation.

Frequently booked are the Kingdom rooms, which are fashioned to look like the inside of a medieval castle. (Legoland pic)

The children’s section is touted as the most enjoyable part of each suite, bedecked with Lego paraphernalia and a treasure chest filled with Lego bricks that can be unlocked after the completion of a scavenger hunt.

For those who’d like to work in peace or watch late-night television, the premium rooms come with a sliding door that creates a partition between bedrooms.

A pull-out bed underneath the bunks in the children’s section is a plus for those with big families, allowing each suite to accommodate up to two adults and three kids.

And two televisions – one in the children’s bedroom, the other in the adults’ – are particularly useful when your family cannot agree on which channel to watch.

The best part of the hotel for the FMT team was the Bricks Family Restaurant, which offers complimentary buffet breakfasts.

For foodies who crave a unique cross-cultural experience, head over to the dining area for an amazing buffet-dinner spread.

Lovers of Christmas dinners can savour mashed potatoes, roast beef, stuffed turkey, lasagna, and smoked salmon until Dec 31. If you’re not big on festive favourites, head over to the Asian-cuisine section, where local delicacies like nasi briyani and ayam rendang await.

An assortment of cakes and sweets takes up at least half of the buffet area. Classic, chocolate, and red velvet Yule logs are only the beginning – there’s also Yorkshire pudding, gingerbread cookies, brownies, jellies, pastries, and 12 different flavours of ice cream.

Lego, of course, plays an important part in the dining experience at Legoland Hotel. (Legoland pic)

And if all this isn’t enough, other eateries at the hotel include Di Mattoni, Kai Sushi Bar, and Coffee@Bricks.

Plus, there is the Mall of Medini right next door – a mere two-minute walk away – for those who’d like to expand their dining options even further, or are hankering to go on a Christmastime shopping spree!
