HK, Canada on the board with wins at Sudirman Cup

Both sides, out of contention for the quarters, ended their campaigns on a high after victories today.

Hong Kong and Canada are already out of contention for the Sudirman Cup quarter-finals but both sides ended their campaigns on a high with victories at the biennial mixed team competition today.

Hong Kong enjoyed a 5-0 sweep of Algeria in Group A, where record 13-time champions China and Thailand have already booked their places in the next round.

Strong singles performances from Saloni Samirbhai Mehta and former men’s world No 1 Angus Ng Ka Lon helped Hong Kong to an unassailable 3-0 lead.

In Group B, where Taiwan and four-time winners South Korea have progressed to the quarters, Canada stormed past Czech Republic 4-1 with mixed doubles pair Kevin Lee and Eliana Zhang getting them off to the perfect start with a 23-21, 21-18 win over Ondrej Kral and Tereza Svabikova.

Wen Yu Zhang and Brian Yang overcame Petra Maixnerova and Jan Louda, respectively, in their singles matches to give Canada a 3-0 lead.

Jiri Kral and Ondrej Kral pulled one back for the Czechs in the men’s doubles, beating Jonathan Bing Tsan Lai and Nyl Yakura 21-9, 21-14.

In the evening session, defending champions China take on Thailand while South Korea face Taiwan.
