ISKANDAR PUTERI:
Malaysian football powerhouse Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League Elite after losing 1-0 to Thailand’s Buriram United at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tonight.

The result was a repeat of the Southern Tigers’ achievement in 2022, when they were also eliminated in the last 16 of the competition.

JDT, playing on home turf, found the net against the visiting Buriram side in the 47th minute but Bergson da Silva’s goal was ruled out after a VAR check found him to be offside.

The drama and thrills continued in the second half as a rejuvenated Buriram created some dangerous chances in the opposition box.

After several attempts, Buriram scored through striker Suphanat Mueanta’s curling strike in the 58th minute to put the visitors ahead.

The hosts thought they had equalised when striker Jorge Lorenzo Rojas converted Arif Aiman’s pass in the 97th minute but VAR once again chalked the goal off for offside.

The quarterfinals will take place in Saudi Arabia from April 25 to May 4.

The winners of the competition will qualify for the Fifa Intercontinental Cup Championship and the Fifa Club World Cup as well as automatically qualify for next year’s edition of the Asian Champions League.
