KUCHING:
Selangor ended the final day of the athletics competition at the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) with a bang – winning both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays at the Sarawak Stadium here today.

In the men’s final, the Selangor quartet of Ahmad Sufi, Danish Irfan Tamrin, Haziq Akhir, and Adam Hakim romped home in 40.86s, leaving Perak (41.06s), and Pahang (41.21s) to take silver and bronze.

“First of all, thank you to my coach and everyone who supported me. Here (at Sukma 2024), I regret not excelling in the 100m and 200m finals. I’m happy I got the 4x100m gold (but) I’m sad as this will be my last Sukma,” said Adam Hakim.

The Selangor women also showed their prowess in the sprint relay when the quartet of Dhanea Marsyella, Nur Afrina Batrisyia, Aina Batrisyia, and Lie Yee Teng powered to the gold medal in 47.97s, followed by Johor (48.32s), and Sarawak (48.38s).

“This is an unexpected victory for us as there were other strong teams in the field, including Johor and Terengganu.”

“This is the first time we are in the same relay team. We could give our best for Selangor and get the gold,” said Nur Afrina, who also won gold in the 100m and 200m sprints to be crowned Sukma 2024’s speed queen.

Meanwhile, Selangor athletics coach Sharil Ab Rahman attributed the success to the runners’ hard work and thorough preparation.

Overall, the Selangor athletics squad finished second in the medal standings with eight golds, five silvers and four bronze. Johor topped the medal tally with a haul of 9-5-4.
