France’s Gracheva is first winner at Wimbledon 2024

The world No 70 broke Lesia Tsurenko five times en route to a 6-3, 6-1 victory in just over an hour.

LONDON:
France’s Varvara Gracheva was the first winner at the 2024 Wimbledon tournament on Monday, beating Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour.

The Russian-born Gracheva, ranked 70th in the world, broke her opponent five times in total in a dominant performance under cloudy skies on Court 5.

Tsurenko, 59th in the world, made 20 unforced errors compared with her opponent’s eight.

Gracheva will face 28th seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine or Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the second round.
