KUALA LUMPUR:
National weightlifter Aniq Kasdan clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 61kg clean & jerk event at the 2023 World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last night.

Aniq, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, lifted 166kg in his second attempt for the bronze.

It was the second podium finish for the 21-year-old at the World Championships.

He won a silver medal at the 2021 meet in Uzbekistan in the 55kg weight category.

Aniq expressed delight at winning his second medal at the World Championships and thanked his family, the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation, the National Sports Council and the National Sports Institute in an Instagram post.

Hampton Morris from the US claimed the gold with a lift of 168kg while Li Fabin from China took the silver after lifting 167kg.

The championships, which offer qualification points for the 2024 Olympics, saw Aniq finish ninth overall in the category with a clearance of 291kg after lifting 125kg in the snatch event.

National weightlifters have three more championships before the deadline to qualify.

The top 10 ranked weightlifters earn a ticket to Paris.

Only the top 10 weightlifters in each category and one representative from each country earn automatic slots to the Games.
