The former world No 1 said he is not ready to take on a full-time job with Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) considering his involvement in the Road to Gold (RTG) programme and as a member of the National Sports Council (MSN).
“I will not accept. I am not ready as my current post is also not easy,” he said.
“For the time being, I have not thought about going into coaching.”
He was responding to various recommendations from others, including former national doubles player Tan Boon Heong, for him to replace Choong Hann.
However, the three-time Olympic silver medallist said he is always ready to help BAM.
Chong Wei, who is a member of BAM’s technical advisory panel, said he can play an advisory role in an effort to improve the performance of national players.
“I will not forget my 19 years with BAM. If the association needs help, I will help. But only if I can give a 100%. Taking on a full-time post with BAM now is just not possible,” he said.
In the meantime, he advised BAM to find the right person to replace Choong Hann with qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games already underway.
“It is not easy to find a replacement but BAM need to act quickly,” he said.
BAM was reported to have begun the process of finding a replacement for Choong Hann yesterday, who ended his almost five-year tenure with the governing body last week.
